Slapenloosheid, insomnia!
What is insomnia? What is the common cause of it?
Insomnia
is defined as trouble falling asleep, awaking in the middle of the
night, or waking up early. Insomnia can be related to stress,
medications, mental or emotional problems such as anxiety and
depression, medical conditions such as arthritis (or any condition that
causes pain), or poor pre-sleep habits such consuming alcohol or
caffeine too close to bedtime as well as other sleep problems (e.g.,
restless leg syndrome) that prevent restful sleep. Insomnia can be
temporary, occasional, or chronic.
Insomnia can be the cause of accidents.
Studies
found that accidents involving motor vehicles or machine tools occurred
twice as often in persons with moderate or severe daytime sleepiness,
compared with those without daytime sleepiness. As many as 100,000
automobile accidents in the U.S. and 1,500 deaths from such accidents
are caused by sleepiness. Experts believe that drowsy driving may
account for as many automobile crashes as drunk driving.
What is Golden Triangle?
According
to the Meridian Theory of Chinese Medicine, the are 3 specific
"acupuncture points" on the wrist, they are Shern-Men point, Day-Ling
point, and Ney-Guan point respectively.Shern-Men
point is along the "Heart Meridian" which is responsible for the mental
health and function of circulatory system. Day-Ling and Ney-Guan points
are along the "Peri-heart Meridian" which can help prevent the
hyper-function of the nervous system. These 3 specific points thus
enclose a "Golden Triangle" which functions for stress-relieving and
sleep-inducing.
What is the relationship between "Golden Triangle" and insomnia?
The
status of blood circulation will affect Melatonin secretion by pineal
gland. Nowadays, due to the stressful and tense lifestyles, biological
clock is easily disturbed, and it is the main cause of insomnia. Meridian
Theory of Chinese Medicine, "Peri-heart Meridian" will function
effectively in 7 to 9 p.m. during this interval, the status of blood
circulation is good. In addition, the optimal interval for the secretion
of Melatonin is in 10 to 11 p.m. If one's biological clock has been
disturbed for a long term, as a consequence, it will lead to insomnia.
Melatonin and Insomnia
Melatonin is a product of the pineal gland. Under normal conditions, Melatonin
levels foreshadow the sleep cycle, usually increasing rapidly from the
late evening until midnight, then decreasing as morning approaches. In
this way, Melatonin helps regulate circulation rhythm, the body's
24-hour "dark-light clock" that governs the timing of hormone
production, sleep, body temperature, and more.People
with high levels of Melatonin usually sleep longer and more soundly
than those with a deficiency. For example, the elderly, who produce less
Melatonin than the young and middle-aged, are typically more
susceptible to insomnia. Similarly, jet lag and consumption of alcohol,
tobacco, and narcotics also interfere with production of this hormone,
and thus disrupt sleep.
